Lablup is now a Participating Sponsor of the Python Software Foundation (PSF).

About the Python Software Foundation

The PSF is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to promoting, protecting, and advancing the Python programming language while supporting the growth of a diverse and international community of Python programmers. Since its founding in 2001, the PSF has served as the steward of the Python ecosystem: maintaining the core Python distribution, protecting the language's intellectual property, operating the Python Package Index (PyPI), and funding community initiatives through its grants program.

Through that grants program, the PSF has distributed over $3 million since 2015 to support Python conferences, workshops, and local community activities around the world. The foundation also organizes PyCon US, the largest annual gathering of the Python community.

Lablup and Python

Backend.AI, Lablup's AI infrastructure operations platform, is built on a Python foundation. Its high-performance asynchronous architecture runs on Python's asyncio and aiohttp, and all core server-side components, including the manager, agent, and scheduler, are written in Python. The Backend.AI client SDK is also distributed as a Python package on PyPI.

Lablup and its team members have contributed to the Python open-source ecosystem well beyond their own product development. The team has improved async context management and WebSocket reliability in the aiohttp project, taken over maintenance of aiomonitor to address observability challenges in complex asyncio server applications, and submitted patches to CPython. Libraries such as Callosum and aiotools, created alongside Backend.AI development, have been released as open-source projects, and the team has shared practical asyncio troubleshooting insights as regular participants at PyCon Korea. Through these efforts, Lablup has grown together with the Python community both in Korea and internationally.

Why This Matters

The growth of the AI industry is built on top of the open-source software ecosystem. Python sits at the center of that ecosystem, and the infrastructure that millions of developers depend on every day, from over 500,000 packages on PyPI to the language runtime itself, is sustained by the PSF and its community of contributors.

By joining as a Participating Sponsor, Lablup aims to contribute to the long-term sustainability of the Python ecosystem and deepen its commitment to the open-source community.
